In July 2007, the innocent life of eleven-year old Ephraim Brown was taken as he was caught in the crossfire of a gang shooting just steps away from his home. The morning that followed demonstrated the power of community, love, and healing. As over a hundred of people gathered on the streets of Toronto to offer a moment of silence for a life taken too soon, it was evident that something must to be done to create a positive community in the Jane and Finch area.

The highly skilled and humble tradespeople of LiUNA Local 506 together with community leaders and friends, transformed a once deteriorated Recreation Centre to a space of honor. With hard work and generous donations of tools and appliances, the Ephraim Place Community Centre was established. Like LiUNA, Ephraim's Place Community Centre serves to build a brighter future, providing programs and services to children, youth, and families.

LiUNA prides itself on building communities and lending a hand to improve the lives, and futures of our members and our neighbours. It is with the selfless acts of our workers and leaders that LiUNA is able to create a safe space for children, youth and families to learn the skills needed to transform something that was once unimaginable to a positive goal. With the helping hand of LiUNA and community leaders, and the establishment of Ephraim's Community Centre, that goal is now one step closer to achieving.
